College Park Industries wins in the world’s most renowned design competition
Warren, Mich., May 14, 2020 The Red Dot Jury has made its decision: The Espire Elbow Pro® emerged victorious from the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2020 and won a Red Dot for its good design quality. College Park Industries collaborated with Altair Engineering and DornerWorks to win in the world’s most renowned design competition.
About the Winning Espire Elbow Pro
The Espire Pro is the most advanced model in the Espire Elbow series. This powered prosthetic joint is easy to use for both clinicians and patients. With a removable 3000 mAh battery and a more proximal center of mass, the Espire Pro functions all day with ease. Patients can use signals from their muscles to operate the arm, providing accurate control. The power stems from a 50 W motor paired with a unique, compact gearbox that can dynamically lift 10 lbs. and statically hold 25 lbs. Each elbow in this series offers the same anatomical design with a variety of custom color and size options. The Espire blends technology with humanity to appeal to the wide range of user demographics.
Red Dot Founder and CEO, Professor Dr. Peter Zec, on the laureates:
“The winners of the Red Dot Award have proved that they have created excellent products worthy of winning an award. The products won over the jury not only through their aesthetic, but also thanks to their incomparable functionality. With their designs, the award winners are setting new standards in their industry. I wish to congratulate them most sincerely on their success.”
College Park President and COO, William Carver:
“We’re so honored to receive this Red Dot award for Product Design. Our goal was to create usable technology that leverages familiar platforms and functional benefits. This strategy provides patients and prosthetists with a powerful yet intuitive assistive device made for everyday life. The Espire series marks an organizational evolution for College Park, demonstrating our commitment to creating product solutions for all mobility needs.”
College Park Engineering Manager, Aaron Taszreak:
“This Red Dot award validates and celebrates our design efforts. One of the biggest challenges we faced as engineers was developing a product that fit the needs of such a diverse user group. We overcame this through a common anatomical housing that accepts various components to meet patient needs. To further build upon this model, the Espire Elbow was designed to be compatible with the widest range of inputs, terminal devices, and future innovations in haptic feedback and pattern recognition. The Espire is now the world’s most customizable product within the prosthetic elbow market, and Red Dot’s recognition is an honor.”
Detailed Evaluation of the Products Entered
The Red Dot Award: Product Design offers designers and manufacturers from all over the world a platform for assessing their products. In 2020, designers and companies from 60 countries entered more than 6,500 products in the competition. The international jury comprises experienced experts from different disciplines and has been convening for around 65 years in order to select the year’s best designs. The adjudication process lasts several days and is based on two essential criteria: The jurors test all of the entries in order to assess not just the aesthetic but also the materials selected, the level of craftsmanship, the surface structure, ergonomics and functionality. After intensive discussions, they make a decision on the design quality of the products. True to the motto “In search of good design and innovation,” only the best designs receive an award.
Espire Elbow Celebrated in Exhibitions, Online, and in the Yearbook
On June 22, 2020, Espire Elbow Pro will be added to the exhibition “Design on Stage” in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, where all of the award-winning products will be on show. The museum will thus be a hot spot for best-in-class industrial design. From that date, the winning Espire Pro from College Park Industries will also be presented in the online exhibition on the Red Dot website. The Red Dot Design Yearbook 2020/2021 comes out in July 2020.
