Name: Nelson Lathrop
Type of Amputation: Left BK
In 1989, Nelson Lathrop's life changed forever when he was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident. Following the accident, Nelson became a left BK amputee and had to learn how to walk all over again with his new prosthetic foot.
At first, Nelson used a Reflex VSP. This foot made it hard for him to do the things he enjoyed, like snowboarding and riding his motorcycle. The Reflex VSP also made it difficult for Nelson to walk up and down inclines, and it prevented him from going where he wanted to go. Everyday factors like warm or cold weather, sand, dirt, and water caused problems like non-maneuverability, and constant maintenance and upkeep. This maintenance issue proved not only to be a hassle for Nelson, but a great embarrassment as well. Additionally, "all the other feet seemed to have a single weakness or point of failure," he stated.
After years of frustration and disappointment, Nelson was introduced to the TruStep foot from College Park. From the very first step, he noticed an extreme improvement in the way he walked. As Nelson himself put it, "the old foot felt like walking without toes, but the TruStep felt like walking with a real foot." With its anatomically correct design and quality hardware, Nelson says that his TruStep, "really simplifies things." He adds, "what I like the most about the TruStep is that anyone can take care of it. There's no constant greasing or lubing, and the parts don't age as quickly as other feet. It's the only foot for me."
Nelson has been on his TruStep for nearly four years, and things are going very well for him. "Ever since I started using the TruStep, things really improved," he affirms. "Sufficient time has lapsed to allow for break-in and maintenance needs and I can honestly say that it is by far the most modular and serviceable piece of hardware I have ever used. It provides a range of motion and feel that really works for my activity level, but also the comfort that I get from wearing it... you get the idea, the product really works."
