Name: Jerry Mullis
Occupation: Retired
Type of Amputation: Right BK
When a compound fracture in his right ankle led to a gaseous gangrene infection 32 years ago, the now 60 year-old Jerry Mullis lost his right leg below the knee. Because of the inadequate market for prosthetics at the time, Jerry suffered through back pain, soreness, limited flexibility, and an unnatural gait using the LuXon Max foot. Things continued to go this way for years, and Jerry knew it was time for something new. It wasn't until 2002 that Jerry's prosthetist, Waldo Esparza from Tampa Bay Artificial Limb, introduced him to the TruStep foot from College Park.
"It felt closer to the real thing than any other foot I had previously experienced." Jerry says of his first time walking on the TruStep. "I also walked with a more natural gait," he adds.
It's been almost 3 years now since Jerry became a TruStep wearer. "The TruStep allows me to work and play with less or no discomfort," he asserts. "With the pivoting ankle each step is more natural, smoother, and I have less rollover." Jerry has been wearing his TruStep since September 2002. "I now can do things more comfortably and efficiently," he beams.
In his spare time, Jerry, a retiree, enjoys gardening, swimming, and biking. "The TruStep makes work and play less strenuous on my residual stump and back," he says. When asked what his friends and family think of his TruStep, Jerry says, "They notice that I have less discomfort, and new friends don't realize that I'm an amputee." Thanks to the TruStep, Jerry can enjoy his life and his retirement to the fullest.
