In 2001, while deer hunting, Dan Boulter, accidentally shot himself with a 12 gage shot gun, which caused him to lose his right leg below the knee. Dan, a retired Dairy truck loader says, "At the time it wasn't funny but now I can laugh about it."
After his amputation, Dan began going for treatment and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan Orthotics and Prosthetic center. Dan tried several feet, including the PathFinder, however, none of these feet were working the way he had hoped. "I was walking with a limp" Dan said. It was at his Physical Therapist's suggestion that Dan meet his current prosthetist, Tim Salley at Wright and Filippis. Dan says "I could go in and get my leg worked on whenever I needed it done. Tim was great!"
When Tim introduced Dan to the TruStep foot, Dan proclaimed, "It was like night and day. I could run again for the first time since the accident!" Even Dan's wife, Janet said "The TruStep was the best thing that has ever happened to Dan. He can now do things he couldn't before and his limp is completely gone."
Since Dan found the College Park TruStep, he feels that his life has been changed for the better. "I used to have a very hard time walking with my limitations," says Dan. "But now, with the TruStep, I can do everything that I did before my accident. The TruStep is easy to walk on and does everything and more, it's as close to my real foot as I can get!"
One more thing that Tim introduced to Dan was the Extremity Games, an extreme sports competition for amputees and people living with limb loss. Tim suggested that Dan try to compete in the Games. Dan responded, "Yeah right, what am I going to compete in?" But, he took the information and looked it over. Despite having a fear of heights, Dan competed in rock climbing at the 2006 Games. Looking back, Dan says with confidence, "I'll try anything once."
At the 2007 Extremity Games, Dan wanted more. He competed two events, rock climbing and kayaking. Although, Dan had never kayaked before, he took 4th place! "Next year I am going for first!" Dan excitedly states.
Dan has been wearing his TruStep foot since 2005 and says "It has made my life easier, considering the degree of my loss. I had a lot of fears when I lost my foot about walking and running," states Dan. "I couldn't run until I got my TruStep, but now I can do anything I set my mind too. I feel 99% whole again!"
